Want to know why we're in Iraq? Ask grateful Iraqis

This letter is in response to Randall Shipp's letter ["Christian? I think George Bush is better dubbed 'deranged,'" April 6].
I have talked to the soldiers. Their families and I have talked to local Iraqi people about what's going on in Iraq.
The Iraqi people are grateful to the American military for what they are doing. Our military personnel are doing a great job in Iraq, and they know the risk for doing that job.
Our media won't report the good things going on in Iraq, because we as a society don't want to hear the good.
We want to hear the worst so we can start pointing fingers and placing blame.
The U.S. has always been the defender of the underdogs. And if you really think that Saddam didn't back the terrorists or harbor them in his country, then you need to have more respect for yourself and find out the truth.
One good source is the Pentagon Channel. They report live from Iraq and talk to the soldiers and the Iraqi people.
As a mother of a Navy sailor, I stand proudly behind my son and every one of his shipmates and all military personnel who've put themselves in harm's way.
No one likes war or having our loved ones killed in the line of duty.
But where would this country be if we didn't have brave men and women who are leaving their families and loved ones and casting their fate across the seas to protect us and those who can't protect themselves?
Before people yell that innocent people are dying for no good reason, they should talk to a military person, or to Iraqis who can tell you the horrors they've seen.
Terrorists prey on the fear they can instill in people. They prey on those who don't think their way, and they have no problem killing themselves or anyone else.
I would rather the fight be taken to the terrorists, than have the terrorists bringing the fight to our homes and land.
