TOKYO – Thirteen people have been killed and ten others were missing as heavy rains triggered mudslides and flooding in central and western Japan, a news report said Thursday.
Kyodo News agency reported at least 13 people were killed in eight prefectures (state) and 10 others were missing in four prefectures.
Among the 13 fatalities, a woman was found dead after a mudslide in central Japan prefecture of Nagano early Thursday, Kyodo said.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said that more heavy rains were expected Thursday and Friday. Up to 10 inches of rain was forecast for southern Japan through Friday morning, the agency said in a statement.
It warned of floods and mudslides in wide areas.
In Nagano, one of the hardest-hit areas, part of a levee on the Tenryu River broke Wednesday morning, according to land ministry officials. It was not immediately clear whether the breach had caused flooding. Nagano is about 110 miles northwest of Tokyo.
About 6,200 people in Nagano and neighboring Gifu prefecture have been advised to evacuate, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency.
